PeerTube is a software, installed on a server. PeerTube empowers people to host their own alternative video platform and share their content.

PeerTube enables these platforms to connect with each other, and with other autonomous platforms (such as Mastodon). This network of platforms can share an amazing video-catalog. Just like when the web started, it's content made by humans, who just want to share, with other humans.

With PeerTube, no more opaque algorithms or obscure moderation policies! Each PeerTube platform you visit is built, managed and moderated by their owners. PeerTube brings video-sharing out of the clutches of Big Tech and surveillance capitalism!

PeerTube is not a YouTube-Killer nor a Twich-clone. It's an alternative. It's different. Just like a bycicle is both different from and an alternative to the car.

Our goal is democratize video (and livestreams) hosting. PeerTube is designed to give back control to each platform owner on how they want to share content.

For exemple, by design, PeerTube isn't fused with a monetization system. PeerTube does not depend on advertisin nor does it mooch off of donations made creators. The downside is: it's not the best place to share content driven by clics, fame, money, etc.

The upside is that PeerTube dosen't need to implement behavior and data tracking, dark patterns or manipulative algorithms to grab and control your attention. For exemple, there is no doomscrolling on our mobile app.

There is a wild variety of content on PeerTube, because there are many reasons to get one's videos out of big tech's clutches.

There are teachers who want to share educational content without sacrificing theirs student's data to exploitative platforms.

Journalists who don't want to see their work invisibilized by "the algorithm". Independent medias that just want to own a platform where their audience can access a back up of their work.

National video archives, performance art collective and cultural structures who simply want to share content without ads imposed against their will.

Collectives of artists and creators who don't want to see big tech companies rule their relationship with their audience (and can stop asking to "please subscribe and ring the bell!").

Citizens, activists and families who just want to share tutorials, informations, hobbies, knowledge...

We are Framasoft: a small French not-for-profit (35 members, 10 employees) with 20 years of existence in the Free-Libre Software community!

We advocate for digital emancipation and cultural Commons, and bring pratical alternatives to a larger audience. In France, we are mostly know for our De-Google-ify suite of web-services, that benefit ~ 2 million persons each month (rough estimate: we don't track users, so we can't know for sure 😅).

We usually work and maintain 50+ digital facilitation projects simultaneously, but rarely as the developers/maintainers. But since 2017, we have been editing PeerTube (with ony one full time paid developer for the first 6 of those 7 years).

We are funded by donations (mainly from the French-speaking community). 94 % of our 2024 funds comes from donations, with 76 % from grassroots donations, and 18 % from fondations' grants.

At first, PeerTube was funded from donations we got for all our work, or through crowdfundings campaigns. More recently, PeerTube benefits of grants from NGI0 programs (managed by the NLnet Foundation), that distribute funds from the European Commission.

All the work presented here is, evidently, not a part of such grants.

As usual in an open-source project: the features will be released when they're ready. That means we will not pressure our devs and partners who work on the app. It also means we aim to release each feature as soon as we feel it's public-ready, and improve on it if need be.

That being said, we are confident we can complete the features listed in the first and second goal by the end of 2025.

We would love to release the livestream feature by the end of 2025, but it's a huge endeavor and there might be some bumps we have not foreseen yet. If funded, we hope to deliver the "livestream from the app" feature in early 2026.

We don't abide by the all-or-nothing rule usually found in crowdfundings: it feels manipulative. We are convinced the mobile app is key to popularizing PeerTube, and hope to convince the growing community that our strategy seems solid.

If we don't reach the funding goals, it means you don't share this vision, and that we need to reprioritize.

In the (extreme) case we get no donation whatsoever during this campaign... we'll probably do and publish the work on first goal anyway. We'll see if we can find other fundings the work for the second goal, and realize it in 2026-2027. In such a dire case, we would reconsider (and probably give up on) the livestream feature for the app.

In the past, we have already funded PeerTube by donations to Framasoft (mainly from French-speaking patrons who support our suite of ethical web-services). This campaign is, for us, a way to learn if the PeerTube community can be mobilized under a common goal, and if we share the same ambitions.
